Brief History
During the 1950s, Bradford delivery vans were a common sight throughout New Zealand towns. Commercial vehicles did not face the same import restrictions as private vehicles at this time, so a large number of Bradford motors and chassis were able to be imported from the United Kingdom. Built with a wooden-framed body, this van was assembled by N R Cooper Limited of Wellington.
Jowett Cars Limited manufactured vans from the 1920s until 1953 when they ceased production of all vehicles. Three Bradford body styles were made - the utility truck, the 6-seater utility car and the panel van (this example).
During the 1980s students from Manukau Polytechnic (now Manukau Institute of Technology) and Unitech rebuilt the body and motor of this van for MOTAT.
