Description
Wall telephone with "sanitary" handset. Central battery type. Large metal black box with twin semi-circular bells on top. The handset is suspended on a hook which emerges from the left hand side of the unit. Maker's plate on the front of the unit says: "Standard Telephones and Cables".
Brief History
Standard Telephones and Cables Limited (later STC plc) was a British telephone, telegraph, radio, and telecommunications equipment manufacturer. Under various names and owners, it operated from 1883 to 1991.
During its lengthy history STC developed several ground-breaking new technologies including pulse code manipulation (PCM) and optical fibres.
