Brief History
The first official New Zealand Post Office was established in Kororareka (now Russell), the first European settlement in New Zealand, by William Hobson in 1840. The Post Office's headquarters were later moved to Auckland before being transferred to Wellington in 1865. During the 1860s the Post and Telegraph Department established "receiving houses" and cast iron "pillar boxes" in the larger towns and cities in New Zealand. Deliveries and private boxes were also introduced in the 1860s.
