Wooden box has hand-written illegible sticker on the top.

Large section of grey adjustable stand has an inscribed numbered scale from 15-39 in increments of 1. Attached to the plate section is a piece of paper attached by Sellotape which is printed: “v 1/v Distance to the viewing aperture from […]”. Sellotape is attached to the arm which has the plate attached.

The smaller section of the grey adjustable stand has two printed stickers attached: “FOR SALES AND SERVICE / CARL ZEISS / JENA / TEL. 728-229 / BOX 10-240 / WELLINGTON” and CARL ZEISS / JENA / 1 / MADE IN DDR”. Plate is attached to the side by screws inscribed: “240882”.

The plug attached to the cord on the top has text embossed: “CAT.38 / PDL / 250 V. / 10 A”. The underside of the plug has text embossed: “S / N / Z / 198 / 1168 / HEAVY DUTY”.

Reflecting mirror has an inscribed numbered scale from 15-40 in increments of 1.

Cardboard box case containing light bulb has printed on the outside on top: “Pilot S28 / Lamp / OSRAM” with stamp on top: “PILOT / 230-240V 25 W / SES CLEAR”. One on side: “OSRAM / OSRAM / MADE IN NEW ZEALAND”. Two other sides printed: “OSRAM / Pilot Lamp”. Bulb within case has printed on top: “MADE IN 25W NEW ZEALAND / 9E / OSRAM / 230 – 240 V”.

Small hinged wooden box containing lenses has label printed on top attached via Sellotape: “v / 1/v / Distance to the viewing aperture from […]”. Hand-written on label: “MPH / RPH.”. Hand-written on underside of lid: “photo to be enlarged x2 use V=2 / photo to be reduced use V=.5 / or 1/v = 2”.

Lenses have readings of magnifications printed on them in black each lens a different reading. Part 1: “50%” Part 2: “75%”. Part 3: “12 (+4 dptr)”. Part 4: “11(+3,5 dptr)”. Part 5: “10 (+3 dptr)”. Part 6: “9 (2,5 dptr)”. Part 7 “8 (+2 dptr)”. Part 8: “7 (+1,5 dptr)”. Part 9: “6 (+1 dptr)”. Part 10 “5 (+0,5 dptr)”. Part 11 “4 (-0,5 dptr)”. Part 12 “3 (-1 dptr)”. Part 13 “2 (-1,5 dptr)”. Part 14: “1 (-2 dptr)”. Part 15: “25%”. Part 16: “12 (+4 dptr)”. Part 17: “11 (+3,5 dptr)”. Part 18: “10 (+3 dptr)”. Part 19: “9 (+2,5 dptr)”. Part 20: “8 (+2 dptr)”. Part 21: “7 (+1,5 dptr)”. Part 22: “6 (+1 dptr)”. Part 23: “5 (+0,5 dptr)”. Part 24: “4 (-0,5 dptr)”. Part 25: “3 (-1 dptr)”. Part 26: “2 (-1,5 dptr)”. Part 27: “1 (-2 dptr)”.
Brief History
This Carl Zeiss Jena Sketchmaster, dating from 1970, is used to transfer aerial photo data to maps, and was used for this purpose at Tasman Forestry in Kawerau in the 1970s. It talks to the use of aerial surveying by industry, here one of New Zealand’s primary industries, forestry.
The Sketchmaster is a photogrammetric plotter through which the operator views the aerial survey photograph and the map simultaneously, manually tracing detail from the photograph onto the map. It utilises the principle of the camera lucida, patented in 1806. The Sketchmaster provided a manual alternative for companies who needed to utilise aerial photography to add detail or revise maps but were without the resources, either financial or skill, to purchase or operate a stereoplotter.
