Description
Argo taxi meter. Mechanical, Pounds, Shillings and Pence, serial no.75677. The unit consists of a large solid steel box with a glass panel on the front. The "Tariff" and FARE are very clearly marked out on the black panel. The currency is in Shillings and Pence with "Extras" at the bottom denoting the Pence amount. A large wooden knob on the right can be rotated to change the Tariff from Hired to Stopped or For Hire. On the back is a set of chain driven wheels. A turning knob winds up the clockwork mechanism inside the meter. Just on the left of this knob is a small round knurled metal wheel which can be turned. On the back are a series of windows and counters. The mechanism is still in running order. At the bottom of the meter is a set of bolts and clamps for fitting the meter onto a taxi.
