Description
Half plate folding camera. The shutter and lens can be removed from the lens board to allow the camera to fold. Shutter manufactured by Thornton Pickard, Altrincham, and lens by A. Laverne & Co., Paris.
Brief History
Thornton-Pickard was a camera manufacturer founded in Manchester in 1888, later moving to Altrincham in Cheshire. The company also manufactured shutters which could be fitted to any camera body and as a result un-marked cameras have been misidentified as manufactured by Thornton-Pickard. There is no manufacturer’s plaque on the wooden body of this half plate folding camera in MOTAT’s collection, and it is likely that it was just the removable shutter unit, that carries a Thornton-Pickard plaque, that was manufactured by the company. With the shutter unit and the lens, made by A. Laverne & Co. of Paris, removed, the camera folds up compactly for carrying.
