Brief History
The original model Brownie was introduced by the Eastman Kodak Company in 1900, selling in America for $1. It was developed as an inexpensive camera for the amateur photographer, children included, and was simple to use. The camera was essentially a box with a simple meniscus lens, and it took Kodak 116 roll film. Nearly 200 different models were produced over the six decades Brownies were available on the market.
The casing of early Brownie cameras was made of heavy cardboard covered with black leatherette. Metal cases, as this example has, were introduced to the 2A Brownie in the Model C version in 1924. The camera was also available in a limited variety of colours.
