Description
Black and white positive transparency on a glass lantern slide by William Andrew Collis.

Image shows Parihaka Pā. Several whare are the focus of the image, including Te Raukura and Miti Mai Te Arero in the mid ground. The Taranaki landscape is visible in the background, as are outlines of people walking. Te Niho o Te Ātiawa - Parāhuka Marae are outside the image frame to the right.

From construction of Te Raukura and later demolition of Miti Mai Te Arero, date is approximated as late 1890s - 1905.

William Andrews Collis (1853-1920) was born in Fiji of Wesleyan missionary parents then moved to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland at a young age and was educated at Wesley College. He settled in Ngāmotu New Plymouth from 1869 to 1872, where he was trained with photographer Hartley Webster before starting his own commercial photography business in 1875. He was also an elected official for the then Borough Council amongst numerous board roles in the wider community and Methodist church. As well as commercial photography work, Collis captured Taranaki scenery, people, and events, including images of Parihaka kainga and te pāhuatanga of 1881. Collis is buried at Te Henui Cemetery.
