Description
Stockert-Shiley CAPS (Computer Aided Perfusion System) unit. Integrated system with pumps, oxygenator, data recorders, and controllers on mobile castors. Stainless steel frame with two telescoping masts. Paper manual for CAPS heart-lung machine included.

The unit has a stainless steel framing consisting primarily of three upright poles, a cabinet at the base, a shelf about halfway up the unit, four swivelling castor wheels support the base. The base cabinet hinges open at the front to reveal a space which houses various electrical parts and cables. Immediately above the cabinet are fitted the pump units consisting of five Multiflow rollerpumps and one Double Head Rollerpump. At the centre of the unit and sitting on the shelf is the main control panels and indicators including a low level detector, micro bubble monitor, dual pressure control, 4 channel temperature monitors, gas blender control, HLM-interface, PFC 100S, and power supply units. Just below the shelf is mounted a SAT/HCT monitor unit. At the top right of the machine is another power supply and gas blender unit marked "CAPS". The machine has various clamps and brackets fitted to allow for adjustment of the components.

This is a 3rd generation HLM (heart-lung machine) which was introduced at Greenlane Hospital shortly after its release in 1985. This was the first heart lung machine with data acquisition and electronic safety technology and was a major step forward for medical technology.
Brief History
The Stockert CAPS heart lung machine is a 3rd generation heart-lung machine, released in 1985. This was the first heart lung machine with data acquisition and electronic safety technology and was a major step forward for medical technology.
CAPS is an acronym for Computer Assisted Perfusion System. This Stockert heart lung machine used sensors and transducers to measure things such as venous reservoir blood level, microbubble activity in the blood stream and heart lung machine circuit system pressure. If these exceeded set limits, then the blood pump is automatically slowed or stopped with audible/visual alarms.

This example was used at Greenlane Hospital, Auckland.
