"In New Zealand there are over four hundred fire brigades belonging to the New Zealand Fire Service Commission. Hundreds more unrecognised brigades belong to large companies. This book is about a large amount of those brigades who are under the auspices of the New Zealand Fire Service. All the brigades belonging to the New Zealand Fire Service have had the opportunity to participate in this book, only some, however, accepted the personal invitation to submit an outline of the history of their brigade's [sic]... The present day information in this book can be taken as what the brigades had in 1985-6." - introduction
