Description
Bell Colt 5-valve radio. Medium wave, AM, only. Serial No. B5 12585. There are 3 knobs on the front panel; on the left is the ON/OFF and Volume control knob, in the centre is the Tone knob and on the right is the Selector knob. When twirled, the red needle can be moved up and down the scale.
Brief History
New Zealand radio and television manufacturer Bell Radio-Television Corporation was formed in 1950, having grown out of an earlier company, Antone Ltd. Antone had been formed by two returned servicemen, initially to manufacture hearing aids. They soon turned instead to radio, manufacturing a radio that could be powered either by batteries or mains electricity.
In 1951 the company began making the Colt 5 valve radio, the first to carry the Bell name rather than Antone. The Bell Colt was manufactured by the company for over 20 years and was a very popular radio with the New Zealand consumer.
