Description
Vertometer [Bausch & Lomb]. Made in the USA circa 1960. This instrument was adapted by Hirst to measure the back-vertex power of the contact lens while it was still mounted on the machine chuck.
The main body of the vertometer is positioned at a 45-degree angle, connected to rear of the base. It is black with silver-coloured metal attachments. The item has a tapered rectangular base which narrows towards the front of the object, with four grey feet. The bottom right foot is cracked. At the front of the object in the middle of the base is a metal switch. Above the switch is the text “BAUSCH & LOMB / MADE IN U.S.A.”
The vertometer has an eyepiece at the front with an integrated adjustable dial. The scale starts at 0 and increases in increments of 30 to 180. Just below this on the main body of the vertometer is a second dial, which ranges from 0 to 180 in increments of 10. On the object’s proper left side is a large dial with a knob in the centre. The scale starts from -25 down to 0 and then up to +25. This dial is controlled by a knob on the right side of the object. There are two bilateral smaller knobs just above. Below the eyepiece there is a circular area with a metal cylinder in the centre. This is where the lens is placed for viewing. On the proper left, printed in white on the side of the main body is the text “USER SERVICEABLE LAMP LOCATED / INSIDE THIS COVER. / CAUTION - DISCONNECT LINE CORD / BEFORE SERVICING.” At the back of the object is a white label with “220 VOLT / LAMP FITTED” handwritten in pen. Below this is a red light and a black electrical cord with a white plastic plug. On the underside of the base is a silver label with the serial number and a larger label which reads “BAUSCH & LOMB / MADE IN USA / MEDICAL EQUIPMENT / CAT. NO. 71-26-64 / 240 VOLTS 50-60 HZ / 0.1 AMPS / MAXIMUM LAMP WATTAGE 25 / CAUTION / ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD. DO / NOT REMOVE COVER. REFER / SERVICING TO QUALIIED SER- / VICE PERSONNEL.”
