Description
Sleeping bag cover and cover lining used by Derek Wright during Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958). The sleeping bag would have gone inside these.
Goose down sleeping bag cover liner, orange outer with khaki green coloured ripstop nylon lining, and chevron compartments sewn with green thread. Two ties at bottom end of sleeping bag are tying the bag to cover, and five ties are behind top edge of sleeping bag. A dome at centre top back attaches liner to cover, and there is a light green tie and tightening toggle around top of sleeping bag.
Makers label on bottom left side "Fairy / DOWN SLEEPING BAG / "EVEREST" MODEL / ARTHUR ELLIS & CO. LTD, / DUNEDIN". Name tag on centre back outside "Name: BALHAM / Size: DOUBLE INNER"
Sleeping bag cover is made from heavy orange cotton fabric and has two buckles sewn to back to roll up with ties. "Leigh Wright" handwritten inside top at back. Green drycleaning tag stapled to top edge "S/D MR..14.75 / 52 31/03/87 (-2) / 554418D-2".
