Bottle of Sauce - John Burgess & Sons, Essence of Anchovies, c. 1911. Taken to Scott Base, Antarctica during the Terra Nova Expedition (early 1910s) and returned to New Zealand with Sir Edmund Hillary's Team after the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958).
Oval shaped glass bottle with wide neck, covered in wax paper with label at top over cork and on front of bottle. Top label "Manufacturers & Proprietors of the Original & S[...] ANCHOVIES / 107, STRAND / JOHN / BURGESS / & SON / LONDON"; Front label "ESTABLISHED [...] / JOHN BURGESS & SONS. / MeM / A / PIQUANT & DELICIOUS CONDIMENT. / PREPARED FROM THE FINEST VEGETABLES & FRUITS. / Manufactory / Corner of the Savoy Steps 107, STRAND / LONDON, W.C."; Label on rim of bottle "Keep / the / bottle / tightly / corked."; label at neck is unreadable through wax paper. Words cast into the back of the bottle are "BURGESS / M.M / PICKLE".
